Module 4 - Mentored Activity: Self-directed learning activity : Performing Alcohol, Tobacco and Other Substance Use Disorders Brief Intervention – Part II

In Part I of this activity, you practiced the skills in relation to tobacco with a standardized patient scenario. Now, in Part II, you will practice with someone you know who uses alcohol, and then with someone you know who uses other substances (or someone who is able to credibly simulate a patient who uses other substances).

Step 1: Select someone you know who drinks alcohol and who is willing to help you practice your assessment and brief intervention skills for alcohol use. Practice assessing the alcohol consumption of that volunteer and delivering him or her a brief intervention, following the same principles as for the tobacco brief intervention you have just practiced (in Part I of this activity), but using the information you have learned about alcohol brief intervention in this module. Practice until you feel you are able to do the assessment and brief intervention for alcohol use disorder with ease. You can still have a peer observe you while you do the assessment and brief intervention and give you feedback on your performance.

Step two: Select someone you know who uses other substances (or someone able to credibly simulate someone who uses other substances), and who is willing to help you practice your assessment and brief intervention skills for other substance use. Practice assessing the substance use risk level and delivering a brief intervention as per the resources you have read in this module. Practice until you feel you are able to do the assessment and brief intervention for substance use disorders with ease. You can still have a peer observe you while you do the assessment and brief intervention, and give you feedback on your performance.

You must complete Part I and Part II of this activity before you perform the mentored activity for this module. You do not need to submit anything to NextGenU.
